Department of Education

Profile

The Department of Education is one of the oldest Departments of Dibrugarh University, which started functioning from 20th September 1965. It started with a teacher-training course called Bachelor of Teaching (B.T). Till 1968 the Department was known as the ‘Institute of Education’ and from 1968 it came to be known as the Department of Education with the same B.T. course. In 1969, the Department was shifted to its permanent Rajabheta Campus. The B.T. course was renamed as the B. Ed. course with effect from 1981-82 session. In 1987, the Science stream in the B. Ed course was introduced, heralding a new beginning of the Department. The Department was raised to the status of “College of Teacher Education” (CTE) from 1st September, 1989.

The Department introduced the M. Ed. Course from 1st September 1989 and four years later the liberal academic course of M.A. in Education was also initiated from the session 1992-93. The Department of Education has been upgraded to a full fledged Post–Graduate Department at present. Thus the Department of Education conducts three post-Graduate Programs in Education, viz. B. Ed, M. Ed and M.A. in Education, besides the Ph. D. Course Work.

The Department has been constantly striving to initiate innovation in its academic programmes, and after introduction of Semester courses in 2001, has also introduced the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) in its PG programmes from 2009. Besides the Ph.D. Programme in Education, the Department will also be introducing the M. Phil. Program in Education from the next Academic Session2013-14, scheduled to commence in January 2013. The Department also conducts researches leading to the Ph.D. Degree and so far 30 scholars have been awarded the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy through this Department, since 1989.

Till 1989, the Department had the total intake capacity of 60 students in the B. Ed. Course of the Department, of which 40 were deputed by the Govt. of Assam and the rest of the 20 students were selected on merit. At present there are 100 seats in the B. Ed. Course of which 40 are reserved for the deputed teachers of the Government Secondary Schools of Assam and 60 for fresh students. Thus this Department has been playing all these years a vital role in the field of teacher-education for a long time.

The Department also carries on extension educational activities like organizing Orientation Courses, Short-term In-service Training Courses, Workshops etc. for Secondary School Teachers, UGC Refresher Course for College and University Teachers, etc.

The Department of Education now has its own new Assam-type building and all the classes and activities of the Department are now conducted in the new building. The Department of Education has a Departmental Library, as well as a small Canteen of its own, within its campus. It is in fact a vibrant Department full of life with young people carrying out various types of activities in and outside the classroom
