Profile

The Department of Sociology was started in the year 1967. The introduction of Sociology in Post-Graduate level in Dibrugarh University had created a new chapter in the growth and development of Sociology in the North-Eastern Region of India. It is the first department of sociology in a university in this region. Since its inception the department has been designing its academic curriculum as per the changing intellectual fervor of the region. The course curriculum of the Department at M.A. (CBCS) and Ph.D. / M. Phil levels have been prepared keeping in view the manpower requirements in various industrial organizations and departments of both public and private sectors. Besides providing teachers in Sociology for Universities Under Graduate Colleges and Higher Secondary Schools of the region this Department has been creating specialized manpower in various capacities to Oil, Coal, Plantation and Power Industries. Alumni from this department are also assets to various government departments such as State Administrative Services, State Police and Prison Services, State Economics Services, Town Planning, Health and Family Welfare, Social Welfare and Probation etc. The Department of Sociology has also played a key role in the establishment of “The Centre for Social Work Studies ” in 2010-11 academic session for teaching Post Graduate semester course in Master of Social Work (MSW). The Department has been publishing “The North Eastern Research Bulletin”, an ISSN Referred Journal since 1970

Vision: We foresee the department as a continuing locus of critical understanding of the problems and prospects of building better societies.

Mission: The department aims at inter disciplinary cooperation in creating and spreading scientific and analytical knowledge along with generating critical agency among its scholars.

Eligibility for admission:

  • M.A.: 45% marks in B.A.(Major) in Sociology or 50%marks in the subject and 45% marks in aggregate.
  • M.Phil: Securing a minimum of 50% marks in the subject in M.A. Cleared with DURAT or having NET –JRF.
  • Ph.D: As per Dibrugarh University Ph.D. regulations.

Duration of programmes:

  • M.A.: 2 Years (4 semesters under CBCS)
  • M.Phil:1 year
  • Ph.D.: Course Work: 6 months

Intake Capacity:

  • M.A.: 50 + 5 (Endowment Seats) = 55
  • M.Phil.: 5
  • Ph.D: As per availability
