Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences

Introduction

The Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences was established at Dibrugarh University in 1983 as the first establishment for offering Four years integrated Bachelor Degree course in Pharmacy (B. Pharm.) in entire North East India with the intake of students from the seven North East States of India (Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland). The initial establishment financial assistance came from the NEC (North Eastern Council), Shillong. The recurring expenditure is borne by the respective North East States on pro-rata basis. The Department, since its establishment, is actively working for the development of Pharmacy Education and Research activities in North East India.

The Department introduced the Post Graduate courses in Pharmacy (M. Pharm.) from 2002 to provide specialized higher studies and R & D activities in Pharmaceutical sector.

All the courses conducted in this Department are approved by the PCI and the AICTE.  The alumni of this Department are engaged in various Pharmaceutical industries, Pharmaceutical academic institutions, Government Regulatory affairs, R & D activities of Drugs and Pharmaceuticals, and as Pharmacy professional in Govt. Health & F.W. Department, Health care professional in various State and National organizations, and serving in various capacities within and outside India.

Objectives:

The primary objective of the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Dibrugarh University is to impart quality Pharmacy Education to produce pharmacy professionals for serving the country in different Government and private pharmaceutical sectors in particular and to serve the whole human society in general. The Department has been working continuously to cater the need of pharmacy professionals in modern pharmaceutical production sectors (API and Formulation Production, QC/QA), Drug Regulatory Administration, Preservation, Distribution, Sale of Drugs and Pharmaceuticals, Patient Counselling, and Research Organizations (Discovery, Design and Development of Drugs and Pharmaceuticals).

The Department also aims for Pharmaceutical Research and Development activities in North East India by utilizing the enormous natural Pharmaceutical potential of this region.

 1. Bachelor of Pharmacy (B. Pharm.) Programme

Minimum qualification for admission

  • First year B. Pharm:

Candidate shall have passed 10+2 examination conducted by the Assam Higher Secondary Council, or any other examination recognised by Dibrugarh University as equivalent to this examination with English as one of the subjects, securing not less than 50% (45% for candidates belonging to SC and ST) marks in aggregate of Physics, Chemistry and Biology (PCB) and/or Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics (PCM).
OR
Candidate shall have passed Diploma in Pharmacy (D. Pharm) Examination of Assam or of any other Institution recognised by the Pharmacy Council of India (PCI) securing not less than 50% marks in the aggregate.

  • B Pharm Lateral Entry (to Third Semester)

Candidate shall have passed D. Pharm. course from an institution approved by the Pharmacy Council of India under section 12 of the Pharmacy Act.

Duration of the programme

The course of study for B. Pharm shall extend over a period of eight semesters (four academic years) and six semesters (three academic years) for lateral entry students. The curricula and syllabi for the program shall be prescribed from time to time by Pharmacy Council of India, New Delhi.

Examinations/Assessments

Examination and evaluation are done on a continuous basis in each semester. 75% marks of each theory and practical paper in a semester are allotted to end semester examination and 25% marks are allotted to internal assessment. The end semester examination is held at the end of each semester.

2. Master of Pharmacy (M. Pharm) Programme:

Minimum qualification for admission

For admission to the first semester M. Pharm. Course, one must have passed four years B. Pharm. course and has scored not less than 55% marks of the maximum marks (aggregate of 4 years of B. Pharm.) from Dibrugarh University or from any other University recognized by the Dibrugarh University, PCI and AICTE.
Candidates applying under sponsored category should have a minimum of two years of teaching experience after obtaining B. Pharm. degree (candidates from academic institutions) or two years of industrial experience with approval as a Chemist from the respective Drugs Control Authority (candidates from industrial organizations).
Every student, selected for admission to post graduate pharmacy program in any PCI approved institution should have obtained registration with the State Pharmacy Council or should obtain the same within one month from the date of his/her admission, failing which the admission of the candidate shall be cancelled.

The program of study for M.Pharm. shall extend over a period of four semesters (two academic years). The curricula and syllabi for the programme shall be prescribed from time to time by Pharmacy Council of India, New Delhi.

3. B Pharm. (Practice) Programme

Duration of the course

The duration of the course shall be of two academic years with each year spread over a period of not less than 180 working days.

Intake capacity: 40

Minimum qualification for admission

(a) A pass in Diploma course in Pharmacy from an institution approved by the Pharmacy Council of India under section 12 of the Pharmacy Act, 1948.
(b) A registered pharmacist.
(c) A minimum of four years of pharmacy practice experience in a community or hospital pharmacy –
(i) A certificate from competent authority stating that the candidate is endorsed as registered pharmacist in the drug license of a pharmacy as proof of practice experience in case of community pharmacist
(ii) A certificate from the Principal/Medical Superintendent/competent person of the Hospital/Health Unit stating that the candidate is working as a pharmacist will be accepted as proof of practice experience in case of hospital pharmacist
(d) A ‘No Objection Certificate’ from the employer in prescribed format (Annexure -A)
Provided that there shall be reservation of seats for the students belonging to the scheduled castes, scheduled tribes and other backward classes in accordance with the instructions issued by the Central Government/State Government/Union Territory Administration, as the case may be, from time to time.

Examination/Assessment

There shall be an examination at the end of calendar year. The first examination shall be the annual examination and the second examination shall be supplementary examination. The examinations shall be of written nature for theory. For the practical, the students shall submit the assignments done by them in the form of a report which will be followed by viva-voce.
60% marks of each theory paper in a semester are allotted to University examination and 40% marks are allotted to internal assessment. For the practical papers, 75% and 25% marks are allotted to assignments and viva-voce, respectively.

 

4. Ph. D. (Pharmacy) Programme:

The Ph. D. Programme is conducted as per the Dibrugarh University Regulations for the Research Council and for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) 2023.

Intake capacity:

Intake of Ph. D. students varies depending on the available vacancies under the recognized supervisors.

Ph. D. Course Work:

All candidates admitted to Ph. D. programme shall have to undertake a Six-Monthly Course Work in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, as per the
Guidelines and Course Structure of Dibrugarh University. Date of admission to the Course Work shall be considered as provisional date of Ph.D. registration. Final Registration with a Ph.D. topic will be done only after clearing the Course Work followed by submission of synopsis.

The Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Dibrugarh University in collaboration with the Research Institute of World’s Ancient Traditions Cultures and Heritage (RIWATCH), Roing, Arunachal Pradesh organized a Two days’ National Seminar on the topic “Integration of traditional herbal medicines of North East India in clinical practice: Importance, Challenges and future” on November 04-05, 2022. Speakers from CSIR-NEIST Jorhat, ICMR-RMRC Dibrugarh, RIWATCH Arunachal Pradesh, NERIST Itanagar, and Central University of Punjab Bhatinda delivered their deliberations. A total of 174 participants have attended the seminar and out of them 84 participants had presented various scientific Posters.

Extension Services:

The Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Dibrugarh University is serving as the focal point of the pharmaceutical professional activities in Assam. The Department also houses the Office of the Indian Pharmaceutical Association (IPA), Assam State Branch.

The Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Dibrugarh University in collaboration with the Research Institute of World’s Ancient Traditions Cultures and Heritage (RIWATCH), Roing, Arunachal Pradesh organized a Two days’ National Seminar on the topic “Integration of traditional herbal medicines of North East India in clinical practice: Importance, Challenges and future” on November 04-05, 2022. Speakers from CSIR-NEIST Jorhat, ICMR-RMRC Dibrugarh, RIWATCH Arunachal Pradesh, NERIST Itanagar, and Central University of Punjab Bhatinda delivered their deliberations. A total of 174 participants have attended the seminar and out of them 84 participants had presented various scientific Posters.

Extension Services:

The Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Dibrugarh University is serving as the focal point of the pharmaceutical professional activities in Assam. The Department also houses the Office of the Indian Pharmaceutical Association (IPA), Assam State Branch.
