To achieve enrichment in the quality of teaching, research and extension activities.

The objective of the Department is to impart knowledge and skills considered essential for facing the challenges of the rapidly changing environment in the field of trade, industry and commerce. The Department is also aimed at imparting knowledge and skill to carry on independent research in the field of Commerce and allied disciplines.

The Post-graduate Department of Commerce of Dibrugarh University was started in the year 1978 with Dr. A.R.M. Rehman as a full-time faculty. In the same year Dr. P.K. Bhattacharyya was appointed who left the department in the next year. In 1979; Dr. R.C. Saksena, the retired Professor of Jodhpur University was appointed on contract basis. He served the Department for five years and left in the year 1984.

The Department has been a pioneer in the field of post-graduate education and research in Commerce in the North-Eastern Region. It conducted two-year full-time M.Com. Course under Annual system since inception. With the changing needs in environment, the Department switched over, in the year 2001, to P.G. Course under Semester System with specialization in Accountancy and Human Resource Management and Entrepreneurship is a compulsory paper for the students. It has been conducting M.Phil. Course in Commerce since 1993 and 37 scholars have been awarded M.Phil. Degree till date. The Department has the unique distinction of being the first center for running M.Phil. Course in Commerce within the North-Eastern Region. The Department has also been promoting research programmes leading to the Ph.D. degree in Commerce and allied disciplines and thirty five scholars have been awarded Ph.D. degree till date.

The Department has the distinction of being recognized as a U.G.C. Refresher Course Center in Commerce. It has successfully conducted 16 numbers of Refresher Courses in Commerce for college and university teachers since 1994-95 and participants from the entire Northeastern States could enrich themselves professionally by attending such courses. Thus the Department approached to live up to the expectations of the people of this region. It has been regularly publishing the annual research journal of Business Studies “VANIJYA” since the year 1989.
