Profile

In the year 2010-11, Dibrugarh University introduced Applied Psychology as a Programme at the Post Graduate Diploma level within its campus, in the Centre for Studies in Applied Psychology (CSAP), DU, in collaboration with Assam Medical College & Hospital, Dibrugarh. Due permission for the Applied Psychology programme under Dibrugarh University, was accorded by the State Government of Assam from that very academic session.

The CSAP, DU, presently provides the MA (Applied Psychology) Programme which has been designed in modular form. If a student desires to exit the MA Programme after the first year (i.e., on successful completion of the 1st and 2nd Semesters), they are to be considered as qualified for the Diploma in Applied Psychology (DAP) Programme. If a student desires to pursue the 2nd year of the Programme and complete the remaining two (3rd and 4th) semesters, cumulatively with the first two semesters, they are considered eligible for the Master’s Degree in Applied Psychology.  

Moreover, from the academic session 2019-20, the CSAP, DU also intends to introduce the Post Graduate Diploma in Counselling Psychology (PGDCP) Programme in the Centre, for which the DU authorities have already accorded permission. The Syllabi of all the proposed PG Programmes of the Centre have been prepared as per the New Dibrugarh University Regulations for the Post Graduate Programmes in Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) approved by the Academic Council of Dibrugarh University in its Meeting held in November 2018.

There is also a provision of lateral entry into the MA (Applied Psychology) Programme.  This facility is provided only to those candidates who have a background in any branch of Psychology either at a Master’s level or PG diploma level. In such a case, the candidate shall have to take admission in the third semester.

Eight batches of students have already qualified for the Post Graduate Degree of the MA in Applied Psychology since the inception of the Centre. Majority of the students have already been placed as mental health professionals across India. Students have also been selected for pursuing the (RCI-recognized) M. Phil Programme in Clinical Psychology at the national level, besides pursuing Ph.D at different Central universities of the country. The Centre also showcases a wide diversity in its students as it has been able to attract students from the different states of India as well as from outside the country.

  • PG Diploma in Counselling Psychology – 18+2(Endowment Seats)=20 Seats

Eligibility Criteria for Admission:

For MA in Applied Psychology & Diploma in Applied Psychology:

  • Candidates having Bachelor’s degree (excluding Fine Arts), including a Medical degree, and other Technical Graduates from Dibrugarh University or any other University recognized by the UGC with at least 45% marks in Major or 50% marks in aggregate will be eligible for admission to the MA Programme.
  • There will be a relaxation of 5% marks for candidates from the SC/ST/OBC categories.

 

For PG Diploma in Counselling Psychology(PGDCP)

  • Candidates must have a Master’s degree in Applied Psychology/ Psychology, Education, Sociology and Social Work from Dibrugarh University or any other University recognized by the UGC.
  • Candidates should have at least 50% marks at the Master’s level will be eligible for admission to the Post Graduate Diploma in Counseling Psychology (PGDCP) Programme.
  • There will be a relaxation of 5% marks for candidates from the SC/ST/OBC categories.
  • Reservation of seats in the PGDCP shall be as per the specified norms of Dibrugarh University.

Method of Selection :

Selection for admission into both the Programmes shall be made through an Admission test or Interview or on Merit basis, to be determined by the University, from time to time

Programme Specific Objective :

The Programme of the MA (Applied Psychology) of CSAP, DU is designed to:

  1. Equip the students with the requite skill in identifying, classifying and diagnosing psychological maladjustments and disorders.
  2. Provide hands-on training to the students in managing actual Clinical/rehabilitation/organisational/educational cases through compulsory field work.
  3. Enable the students to design and implement effectively, intervention programme and strategies for management and treatment of psychological maladjustments and disorders.
  4. Enable the students to acquire a thorough understanding of preventive and control measures to maintain or promote well being in self and act as instruments of positive mental health in community.
  5. Infuse the students with a research orientation so as to enhance existing knowledge in the field of Psychology.

With effect from the academic session 2019-20, the Centre for Studies in Applied Psychology, Dibrugarh University, also will be introducing the Post Graduate Diploma in Counselling Psychology (PGDCP) Programme in the Centre. The PGDCP has been designed keeping in mind the demand for skilled and competent Counsellors in Secondary schools, and in other institutions in society.
The Goal of the Post Graduate Diploma in Counselling (PGDCP) Programme is to create a force of skilled personnel having advanced knowledge and skills of counselling society with sensitivity and responsible social awareness. The Courses in the Programme are designed to emphasize an experiential style of learning. Central to counselling skills practice, is the idea that to understand the experience of the other, one has to first understand ‘the Self’. The Programme is structured in a matter so as to ensure that students learn not only from what is taught, but also by actively engaging in the various exercises including self-exploration. Much of the learning will be in small groups, and there will be an emphasis on the learner, where appropriate, sharing and reflecting on their own experiences. As the Post Graduate Diploma in Counselling Programme (PGDCP) is an advanced skills programme, besides being a value-addition programme for the adult learner, as part of the learning experiences, students are expected to apply and integrate their learning experiences to their existing place of work (as helpers) in their period of internship as a part of the curricular requirements, during which they will be mentored and/or supervised by the Faculty members of the Centre.

  1. Explain the purpose, scope, theories and approaches in counseling with a focus on its relevance in personal as well as professional context.
  2. Build personal qualities in the mental health personnel for growth and professional development as necessary requisites for effective counseling.
  3. Enable students to practice counselling by acquiring a thorough understanding of preventive and control measures to maintain and promote wellbeing in self and act as instruments of positive mental health in a community.

ADDITIONAL SERVICES OFFERED BY THE CENTRE FOR STUDIES IN BEHAVIOURAL SCIENCES (CSBS), DIBRUGARH UNIVERSITY

In our day to day life, all of us face different situations in our lives which may be hard to deal with on our own at times. This is especially true for young students who enter into a new phase of life when they enroll themselves in a university in order to pursue various Courses and Programmes at an advanced level. Often, along with the new academic challenges in a new environment, they also face various sorts of crises like making all sorts of adjustments in a new setting, difficulties in the emerging and past relationships, health issues, financial or personal difficulties, academic and social stress owing to the change in educational and social environments – any, or all of which, may hamper their overall psychological well being. The severe competition, pressure, criticism from others, low esteem and lack of self confidence, inadequate recreation and relaxation opportunities and end-hour hurried learning for various in-semester and end-semester assessments often push some students over the brink, leading to increased stress levels among these young students.

Mental health and well being of students are integral to measure the health and success of a learning campus in today’s world, as both are major components of overall holistic health of youth. Seeking these two goals in one’s life is not something to be afraid of and there should be no shame, stigma or blame attached to it. Thus, in order to be learner-friendly and to ensure healthy and holistic development of all its students as also the University members on its campus, the Dibrugarh University seeks to provide a comprehensive strategy to ensure mental health and well-being of everyone on its campus.

The Centre for Studies in Applied Psychology (CSAP), DU, which offers the academic programme MA in Applied Psychology, would like to extend a helping hand on this front, and offer the skill and expertise of its faculty members, for Extension services and support in the form of Counselling services to all the students who feel lonely and insecure, confused and in need of a helping hand and support at times in their lives during their stay within the Campus. Our mission and goal is to promote an enabling environment in the University campus so as to promote positive and all-round development of all within this campus, so that their stay in this campus becomes full of positivity and growth for all learners – both personally and professionally.

The teachers of the CSAP, DU, are available in the Centre on all working days of the week from 9.30 AM – 5.30 PM. We also offer regular and voluntary Counselling Services in the Counseling Cell, of the Dibrugarh University Health center, on all these days from 3.00 PM to 5.00 PM.
