Dibrugarh University holds 21st Convocation

Dibrugarh University organized the Twenty-first Convocation Ceremony on May 3, 2023. The event was presided over by the Hon’ble Governor of Assam and Chancellor of Dibrugarh University, Shri Gulab Chand Kataria. The Hon’ble Vice President of India, Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar, attended as the Chief Guest, while the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Assam, Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma attended as Guest of Honour. Hon’ble Minister of State of Petroleum and Natural Gas and Labour and Employment, Shri Rameswar Teli, and Hon’ble Minister of Education, Assam, Dr. Ranoj Pegu, were also present at the function.

The total number of applicants conferred with degrees, starting from the Undergraduate level to the Ph.D. degree, was 11,431. However, on the day of the Convocation, 1694 candidates were present at the venue to receive Postgraduate, M. Phil, and Ph.D. degrees. The top graduates in Science, Arts, and Commerce, and the toppers in all postgraduate courses under Dibrugarh University were awarded the Governor’s Gold Medal for Excellence. In all, there were 39 Gold Medal recipients during this convocation. The student with the highest mark in the Department of Anthropology received the ‘Dr. Jonali Kropi Memorial Gold Medal and Endowment Award.’

In addition, the ceremony saw two distinguished persons being awarded honorary doctorates. Noted litterateur and journalist of Assam, Smti. Nirupama Borgohain, received the D.Litt. degree (Honoris Causa), while renowned meteorologist and climatologist Professor Bhupendra Nath Goswami received the D.Sc. degree (Honoris Causa). The Hon’ble Vice President of India and Chief Guest of the XXI Convocation, Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar, was part of a sapling plantation ceremony named as pragyavriksha – symbolically implying the tree’s profound capacity to not merely provide shelter and succor but being a fount of eternal wisdom, as well as a repository of history and culture.

The convocation ceremony began with a Students’ Procession at 8.30 AM and concluded by 12.15 PM.
