Swarnalata Baruah Chatri Nivas of Dibrugarh University celebrated Swarnalata Diwas on the 17 November, on the occasion of the 83rd birth anniversary of Late Dr. Swarnalata Baruah, former Professor of the Department of History, Dibrugarh University. The hostel has been organizing this event since 2018, after the establishment of the Hostel in 2017.
Overall four events were organized covering the entire day.
The day started with a Yoga session in the morning, conducted by experts from Prajapita Brahmakumaris.
In the afternoon around 3.30 pm, a few boarders visited Prerona Children’s Home to provide some essentials and spend some quality time with the children.
A collaboration with NSS DU unit has also been initiated by the hostel to work towards attaining the following Sustainable Development Goals in near future.

At 6.00 pm, a meeting was organized in the memory of Late Dr. Swarnalata Baruah in the hostel premises. The meeting was graced by the esteemed presence of Prof. Jiten Hazarika, Vice-Chancellor of Dibrugarh University. Furthermore, Dr. Pallabi Deka Buzorbaruah, Professor, Department of Assamese, Dr. Manashree Chetia, Assistant Professor, Centre for Studies in Philosophy, and Late Dr Swarnalata Baruah’s family also graced the occasion. The guests turned the evening into a memorable one by their valuable speeches, focussing primarily on the life and work of Dr Swarnalata Baruah, which inspired the boarders of the hostel. Following this, the prize distribution ceremony for the interdepartmental/Centre essay competition, was organized in the meeting. The warden of the hostel also announced the formation of four units: SLBCN Community Outreach unit, Best Practice unit, career counseling unit, and soft skill practice unit to ensure the participation of the hostel boarders in extracurricular activities. Henceforth, all the hostel activities will be organized by these units.
Finally, Dr. Swarnalata Baruah Memorial Award was awarded to two hostel boarders, Leema Deori (2021-22), Anushree Deb (2022-23). At the end, Dr Binita Pathak, Hostel Warden of SLBCN, DU, delivered the ceremony closing remarks and vote of thanks.
