On the 17th November 2021, the Swarnalata Baruah Girls Hostel of Dibrugarh University, observed Swarnalata Divas, on the occasion of the Birth Anniversary of the renowned female Historian of NE Region late Professor Swarnalata Baruah. The theme of the program was “Carbon free Dibrugarh University Campus to tackle Global Climate Emergency”. On the day, the boarders of the hostel organized a cleanliness drive in the university campus at 6.30 AM. As a part of the drive, they also planted various useful plants in the surrounds of the University.
Based on the theme of the event, an awareness drive on ‘cleanliness and the climate action’ was conducted in all the departments and the centre of studies at 12:30 PM, followed by the same activity in hostels at 6:30 PM. The awareness drive was aided by designing and distributing a poster containing various useful information regarding maintaining a green and clean university campus, waste management and climate action inside the university campus. Dr. Binita Pathak, the Warden of the hostel and an Assistant Professor of the Department of Physics also participated actively in those activities.
The major activity of the day was an online session held at 3.30 PM, hosted by the Hostel Warden. Based on the theme of the event, Padmashree Jadav Payeng, the Forest Man of North-East India was invited as the Chief Guest. The family members of late Professor Swarnalata Baruah- son Advocate Abhimanya Baruah, daughter-in-Law Dr. Sultana Hazarika and grand daughter Ms. Aparupa Apsara Baruah also participated in the session. The Dean, Student Affairs Professor Nirud Baruah, (Department of History) and the Chief Warden and Professor Surajit Borkotoki, (Department of Mathematics) were also present in the online event. In his speech, Padmashree Jadev Payeng mentioned that it is inevitable to create the atmosphere where plants and animals can live together safely and help improving the deteriorated present day situation of the climate change. He added that we all should work together to fight against the deforestation of the N.E. Region. The rivers, wetlands and mountains are equally important to keep the nature in favour of mankind. The students and other participants actively engaged in the interaction with Padma Sri Jadev Payeng very encouragingly. The family members of late Dr. Swarnalata Baruah also expressed their respect and enlightened various events of her life. Dean and Professor of Histroy Dept. Dr. Nirud Baruah and Chief Warden Prof. Dr. Surajit Borkotoky also expressed their view towards the polite but strong character of Late Dr. Swarnalata Baruah.
At 6.30 PM the Dr. Swarnalata Baruah Girls’ Hostel of Dibrugarh University became bright with distinct lightning of candle light by the Girls of the hostel.
