Department of Chemistry was started in 1968 and since then offering M.Sc. (with Organic, Inorganic and Physical Specialization) and Ph. D. Degrees. From 1988 the Department started M. Phil course. Since inception the department has very active research group working in the areas of Polymer Chemistry, Transition metal and main group Co-ordination Chemistry, Natural Product and Synthetic Organic chemistry, Materials Chemistry, Synthetic Nanomaterials, Coal Chemistry and semiemperical calculations (EHMO and Normal coordinate analysis) of inorganic complex compounds. Department is also collaborating actively with NEIST, Jorhat and other institutes of national importance. The Dept. has completed

several projects in frontier areas sponsored by DST, ISRO, UGC, GBPIHE etc. and being awarded with FIST-I (2003-2008) by DST, Govt. of India and SAP (UGC, 2007-2012). Recently, it has also established international link under Indo-Ukrain Collaborative research (sponsored by DST, Govt. of India and Ukrain Academy of Sciences).

The department is equipped with Sophisticated Instruments like UV Spectrophotometer,

 IR Spectrophotometer, Impedance Analyzer, TG-DTA Thermal Analyzer, and CV Analyzer.
